2017 Summer Academy
June 11 – July 21
- College Preview courses will be taught Monday thru Friday during Week 1 of the summer. There will be morning and afternoon sessions taught by our highly qualified staff. Classes will focus on Personal Finance & Budgeting, ACT/SAT prep, College Writing and College Transition to prepare the participants for the upcoming school year.
- Students will also get to visit various college campuses in-and-out of state during Week 2. This year our students will have the opportunity to tour the campuses of Berea College, UNC Asheville, and Western Carolina University.
- Students will participate in a work-study (job shadowing) experience of their liking to acquire and enhance working skills for the professional world. Students are expected to make the initial contact and seek out the business/organization they would like to work with. The UB Summer Staff will assist our students in securing their work-study assignment, as well as, visit the students’ work-study locations from Monday thru Friday to ensure a mutually beneficial working environment. Students are expected to engage in work-study obligations a minimum of 4-hours per day during Weeks 3, 4, and 5. If a scholar already has a job and would like to maintain their employment throughout the summer, their job will count as their work-study.
- The Summer Academy will conclude with a trip to our nation’s capital in Washington DC (and a day trip to Baltimore) for a fun filled week visiting national monuments, Smithsonian museums and historic sites, tours of Capitol Hill and the National Aquarium, and attend a comedic and hilarious play at the Kennedy Center.
